Introduction
 

navadvépasya mähätmyaà
     vidvadbhir yat saméritam
saìgåhitaà mayä sarvam
     adhyäye 'smin sukhävaham

     navadvépasya - of Navadvépa mähätmyam - glory;- vidvadbhiù - by the wise; yat - which; saméritam - said; saìgåhitam - collected; mayä - by me; sarvam - all; adhyäye - chapter; asmin - in this; sukha - happiness; ävaham - bringing; ädau - inthe beginning; karëapürasya - of Kavi-karëapüra; eva - indeed; varëanam - the description; çåëu - please hear; yatnataù - carefully; caitanya-carite kävye - in Çré Caitanya-carita Mahä-kavya; navadvépa-kathäçraye - in the description of Navadvépa.
 

     In this chapter I have collected everything the learned great devotees havesaid about Navadvépa. First, please carefully hear Kavi-karëapüra's description of Navadvépa in his Caitanya-carita Mahä-kävya:

iyaà mahé bhägyavaté mahéyasé
     divo 'pi divyäd api nirmalair guëaiù
mahanti ratnäni yadä dadäty ato
     dadhau navadvépam atéva-durlabham

     iyam - this; mahé - earth; bhägyavaté - fortunate; mahéyasé - more; divaù - than the
higher planets; api - and; divyät - than the higher planets; api - and; nirmalaiù - with pure; guëaiù - virtues; mahanti - great; ratnäni - jewels; yadä - when; dadäti - gives; ataù - then; dadhau - gave; navadvépam - Navadvépa; atéva - very; durlabham - rare.
 

     The fortunate and purely virtuous earthly world is more exalted than even Svargaloka. When the earth was giving great jewels it also gave the very rare abode of Navadvépa.

anekadhä saïcita-bhägya-saïcayaà
     samastam ekatra vidhäya sarvataù
mahéruhair utpulakeyam utsukä
     dadhau navadvépa iti prathäà kim u

     anekadhä - many; saïcita - collected; bhägya - good fortune; saïcayam - multitude;
samastam - all; ekatra - in one place; vidhäya - placing; sarvataù - completely; mahéruhaiù - with trees; utpulakä - with bodily hairs erect in ecstasy; iyam - this;utsukä - eager; dadhau - placed; navadvépe - in Navadvépa; iti - thus; prathäàfame;kim - whether?; u - indeed.
 

     Has the earth, its trees now hairs standing in ecstasy, eagerly collected all transcendental opulences and placed them in Navadvépa?

prabhuù kadä vävatariñyatéty ado
     vicintayantyä manasi praphullayä
manorathäkränti-viçäd anekaçaù
     satäà pädäbjänu-gatir yayä dadhe

     prabhuù - the Lord; kadä - when?; vä - or; avatariñyati - will descend; iti - thus; adaù - below;vicintayantyä - thinking; manasi - in the heart; praphullayä - joyful; manoratha - desires; äkränti-visät - overwhelming; anekaçaù - many; satäm - of the devotees; päda-abja - lotus feet; anu-gatiù - following; yayä - by her; dadhe - placed.
 

     " When will the Lord descend?" Thinking this way in her heart, and overcome with spiritual desires, the earth began to follow the footsteps of the great devotees.

iyaà navadvépa-miçena mediné
     dadhära bhüyo mathuräm iväparäm
vaded amuñyaà ca vimukti-dayiné
     prabhoù pada-sparça-rasämalätmanaù

     iyam - she; navadvépa-miçena - as Navadvépa; mediné - the earth; dadhära - held; bhüyaù - again; mathuräm - Mathurä; iva - as if; aparäm - peerless; vadet - may say; amuñyam - of it; ca - and; vimutki-dayiné - granting liberation; prabhoù - of the Lord; pada - of the feet; sparça - the touch; rasa - nectar; amala - pure; ätmanaù - heart.
 

     The earth held Navadvépa as if it were another peerless Mathurä. It is said that, heart purified by the nectar touch of the Lord's feet, she now offers liberation.

     Flooding Lord Çiva's matted hair splendid with a necklace of skulls and a reflection of the crescent moon and wonderfully splendid as a çapharé fish, pure with the touch of the Supreme Personality of Godhead's lotus feet, beautiful, sweet, manifesting the supreme abode, restless, transcendental, eternal, flowing with pure waters, drying up the ocean of repeated birth and death eventhough it is itself liquid, glorious, holding the transcendental form of Lord Kåñëa in its embrace, destroying material illusion even though its course is winding, filled with playful waves, and bearing the fragrance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Ganges, the famous river of the celestial worlds now flowing on the earth, beautifies the land of Navadvépa.

vasanti yatra kñiti-deva-sattamäù
     sadä sadäcara-paräù paräyaëäù
nirantaraà veda-vidhäna-karmasu
     çruti-småténäà vidhayaù çarériëaù

     vasanti - reside; yatra - where; kñiti-deva-sattamäù - exalted brähmaëas; sadä - always; sad-äcära-paräù - saintly; paräyaëäù - devoted; nirantaram - always; veda-vidhäna-karmasu - in activities prescribed by the Vedas;  çruti-småténäm - of çruti and småti; vidhayaù - the rules; çarériëaù - personified.

     In Navadvépa reside exalted, saintly, devoted brähmaëas, who always follow Vedic duties, and who are personifications of çruti and småti.

sva-bhäva-bhäjäà bhiñajäà mahattamäù
     sa-dharma-niñöhäç ca viñäà varäù pare
pratiñöhayä nirbhara-çubhrayä sadä
     samanvitä yatra vasanti mänaväù

     sva-bhäva-bhäjäm - own nature; bhiñajäm - of physicians; mahattamäù - the best; sa-dharma-niñöhäù - following prescribed duties; ca - and; viñäm - of vaiçyas; varäù - the best; pare - others; pratiñöhayä - by reputation; nirbhara-çubhrayä - very pure; sadä - always; samanvitäù - endowed; yatra - where; vasanti - reside; mänaväù - people.
 

     In Navadvépa reside exalted physicians, pious, dutiful vaiçyas, and many other gloriously respectable people.

tenaiva varëitaà candrodayäkhye näöake punaù

gauòa-kñauné jayati katamä puëya-térthävataàsa-
     präyä yäsau vahati nagaréà çré-navadvépa-nämném
yasyäà cämékara-vara-rucer éçvarasyävatäro
     yasmin mürtä puri puri parispandate bhakti-devé

     tena - by him; eva - indeed; varëitam - described;candrodayäkhye näöake - in the Çré Caitanya-candrodaya Näöaka; punaù - again; gauòa-kñauné - in Bengal; jayati - all glories; katamäù - which; puëya-tértha - of sacred places; avataàsa-präyäù - the crest jewels; yä - which; asau - it; vahati - carries; nagarém - the city; çré-navadvépa-nämném - named Çré Navadvépa; yasyäm - in which; cämékara-vara-ruceù - the splendor of gold; éçvarasya - of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; avatäraù - the incarnation; yasmin - in which; mürtäù - forms; puri puri - in every home; parispandate - shines; bhakti - devotion; devé - goddess.
 

     He (Kavi-karëapüra) has also described (Navadvépa) in the following verse of Çré Caitanya-candrodaya Näöaka:

     All glories to the crest-jewel of sacred places in Bengal that bears the name Navadvépa! There the Supreme Personality of Godhead descended in a form splendid as gold. There Goddess Bhakti is splendidly manifest in every home.

çré-gaura-gaëoddeça-dépikäyäà ca

rasajïäù çré-våndävanam iti yam ähur bahu-vido
     yam etaà golokaà katipaya-janäù prähur apare
sita-dvépaà prähuù param api para-vyoma jagadur
     navadvépaù so 'yaà jayati paramäçcarya-mahimä

     çré-gaura-gaëoddeça-dépikäyäm - in the Gaura-gaëoddeça-dépikä; ca - and; rasajïaù - those expert at relishing the transcendental mellows; çré - våndävanam - Sré Våndävana; iti - thus; yam-which;ähuù - say; bahu - vidaù - very learned; yam - which etam - this; golokam - Goloka; katipaya - some; janäù - persons; prähuù - say; param - again; api - also; para-vyoma - the spiritual sky of Vaikuëöha; jagaduù - say; navadvépaù - Navadvépa; saù ayam - this;jayati - all glories; parama - transcendental; äçcarya - wonderful; mahimä - with glories.
 

     In Çré Gaura-gaëoddeça-dépikä, also, he said:

     Some learned devotees say that Navadvépa is identical with the land of Våndävana. Others say that Navadvépa is actually the spiritual planet Goloka. Some say that Navadvépa is the planet Svetadvépa, and others say that Navadvépa is actually the spiritual sky of Vaikuëöha. All glories to the wonderfully glorious land of Navadvépa!

     bhavenälaìkurvan bhuvana-mahitaà çrotriya-kulam

     sa devaçcaitanyäkåtir atitaräà naù kåpayatu

     Now please hear what Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé has said in his prayers to Lord Caitanya:

     He is the shelter of the people of Bengal. His glory is manifested in Navadvépa. By birth He ornaments the brähmaëa community, which is worshiped in all the worlds. By accepting it, He purifies the paramahaàsa-äçrama in this world. May that Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Caitanya, show us His great causeless mercy.

     Now please hear the statement of Çréla Prabodhänanda Sarasvaté:

     Let us glorify the boundlessly merciful Supreme Personality of Godhead, the prince of Vraja. To taste the intoxicating sweet waves of the nectar of transcendental love for Kåñëa, as well as to give that nectar to others, He has now appeared in the transcendental abode of Navadvépa as Lord Caitanya Mahäprabhu.

çré-våndävana-däsa-öhäkurasya

nityänandädvaita-caitanyam ekaà
     tattvaà nityälaìkåtaà brahma-sütram
nityair bhaktair nityayä bhakti-devyä
     tätaà nitye dhämni nityaà bhajämaù

     çré-våndävana-däsa-öhäkurasya - of Våndävana dasa; nityänanda - Nityänanda; advaita - Advaita; caitanyam - Lord Caitanya; ekam - one; tattvam - principle; nitya - eternal; alaìkåtam - decorated; brahma-sütram - brahma-sütra; nityaiù - eternal; bhaktaiù - with devotees; nityayä - eternal; bhakti - devotion; devyä - by the goddess; tätam - extended; nitye - eternal; dhämni - in the abode; nityam - eternally; bhajämaù - we worship.

     Çré Våndävana däsa Thäkura has said:

     We eternally worship Lord Nityänanda, Lord Advaita, and Lord Caitanya, who are the single Supreme Personality of Godhead, who are eternally decorated with spiritual glory, and who eternally stay in Their eternal transcendental abode with Thier eternal devotees and with the eternal goddess of devotion.

     The following meditation on Navadvépa (is found in the Çré Caitanyacandrärcana-candrikä):

     In the beautiful, purifying Ganges, where the shores are filled with beautiful blossoming trees and vines, where the waters are filled with waves, where there are gentle breezes, swans, lotus flowers, and bumblebees, where there are splendid holy places studded with jewels, where the dust bears the impression of Lord Gaura's lotus feet, by the charming, golden, nectar shore, Çré Navadvépa, very auspicious, a great flood of bliss, charming with many kinds of flowers, fruits, trees, and vines, served by the great souls, and filled with the sounds of many kinds of colorful birds, sounds that charm the ear and heart, shines with great splendor.

     ärämopavanäli-madhya-vilasad-vedi-vihäräspadam
sad-bhakti-prabhayä viräjita-mahad-bhaktäli-nityotsavaà
     praty-ägäram aghäri-mürti su-mahat bhätéha yat paööanam

     tat - of it; madhye - in the midst; dvija - brähmaëas; bhavya-loka - and pious people; nikara - multitudes; agäräëi - gomes; ramya - charming; aìganam - courtyards; äräma - gardens; upavana - groves; ali - multitudes; madhya - inthe middle; vilasat - shining; vedi - courtyards; vihära - of pastimes; aspadam - places; sat - transcendental; bhakti - devotion; -prabhayä - by the splendor; viräjita - glorious; mahad-bhakta-ali - for the great devotees; nitya - eternal; utsavam - festival; prati - every; agära - house; agha-ari - of Lord Kåñëa, the enemy of the Agha demon; mürti - the form; su-mahat - great; bhäti - shines; iha - here; yat - what; paööanam - city.
 

     In the city of Navadvépa many brähmaëas and pious people have their homes, and there are many beautiful courtyards, gardens, groves and splendid pastime places. The devotees celebrate eternal festivals glorious with the splendor of transcendental devotional service. In every home the Deity of Lord Kåñëa shines with great splendor.

     tat - of that; madhye - in the midst; ravi - of the sun; känti - the splendor; nindi - rebuking; kanaka - gold; präkära - wall; sat - excellent; toraëam - gates; çré-näräyaëa - of Lord Näräyaëa; geham - temple; agra - before; vilasat - splendid; saìkértana - saìkértana; präìganam - courtyard; lakñmé - the goddess of fortune; antaù-pura - private rooms; päka - kicten; bhoga - dining room; çayana - bedroom; çré-candraçälam - rooftop balcony; puram - palace; yat - which; gauräìga-hareù - of Lord Gaura-Hari; vibhäti - shines; sukhadam - delightful; sva - own; änanda - bliss; sambåàhitam - expanding.
 

     In Navadvépa Lord Gauräìga-Hari's delightful palace, enclosed by a golden wall eclipsing the sun's splendor, glorious with a grand entrance-gate, splendid saìkértana-courtyard, temple of Çré Lakçmé-Näräyaëa, kitchen, dining-room, bedroom, and rooftop balcony, shines with great splendor.

     sac-candrätapa-padmaräga-vidhu-ratnälambi yan-mandiram

     tat - of that; madhye - in the midst; nava - new;cüòa - crest; ratna - jewel; kalasam - dome; vajra - diamond; indu-ratna - moonstones; antara - within; muktä - pearls; däma - strings; vicitra - wonderful; hema - gold; paöalam - roof; sat - transcendental; bhakti - devotion; ratna-äcitam - studded with jewels; veda - four; dvärädoors; sat - excellent; añöa - eight; måñöa-maëi - mrstamani jewels; rut-çobhä - splendor; kapäöa - panels; anvitam - with; sat - excellent; candrätapa - awning; padmaräga - rubies; vidhu-ratna - moonstones; älambi - with; yat - which; mandiram - palace.
 

     The palace has a dome of jewels, a roof of diamonds, candramaëis, other jewels, pearls, wonderful gold, and transcendental bhaktimaëis, four doors with eight panels splendid with måñöamaëi jewels, and awnings of rubies.

tan-madhye maëi-citra-hema-racite manträrëa-yantränvite
     ñaö-koëäntara-karëikära-çikhara-çré-keçara-sannibhe
kürmäkära-mahiñöha-yoga-mahasi çré-yoga-péöhe 'mbuje

     tat - of that; madhye - in the midst; maëi - jewels; citra - wonderful; hema - of gold;
racite - made; mantra - mantras; arëa - letters; yantra - diagrams; anvite - with; ñaö-koëa - with siz corners; antara - within; karëikära - whorl; çikhara - point; çré-keçara - filaments; sannibhe - near; kürma - of a tortoise; äkära - form; mahiñöha - greatest; yoga - of yoga; mahasi - in the splendor; çré-yoga-péöhe - in the sacred place; ambuje - lotus; äkäçätapa - sunshine; candra-pätra - camphor leaf; vimale - splendid; yat - which; bhäti - shines; siàhäsanam - throne.
 

     In the midst of that place is a wonderful golden six-petal lotus decorated with mantra-letters and mystic patterns (yantras). In the middle is the lotus whorl and filaments. There, splendid as sunshine and cooling as camphor, is a sacred place in the shape of a tortoise. There a lion-throne shines with great splendor.

     The base and sides of the throne are fashioned from rubies, the legs from sapphires, and the back from lapis lazuli. It is splendid with wonderful pearls and the best jewels. There are soft moon-cushions covered with silken cloth. The throne rests on an octagonal golden base where an eight-letter mantra of meditation on LordHari's feet is inscribed.

     I meditate on Çré Navadvépa, which some say is the spiritual sky of Vaikuëöha, some say is the realm of Goloka, and they who know the truth say is Çré Våndävana.

     yaù - who; sarva-dikñu - in all directions; sphuritaiù - manifested; su-çétaiù - cooling; nänä-drumaiù - various shade trees; süpavanaiù - with gentle breezes; parétaù - filled; çré-gaura - of Lord Gaura; madhyähna - midday; vihära - of pastimes;pätraiù - with objects.
 

      I meditate on Çré Navadvépa, where in every direction are cooling breezes and many trees where Lord Gaura enjoyed His noon pastimes.

     suvarëa-sopäna-nibaddha-térä
vyäptormibhir gaurava-gäha-mäyyes

     çré-svarëa-dhé - golden; yatra - where; vihäritä - enjoyed transcendental pastimes; ca - and; suvarëa - with golden; sopäna - stairs; nibaddha - bound; térä - shores; vyäpta - manifested; ürmibhiù - with waves; gaurava-gäha-mäyyeù - great.
 

      I meditate on Çré Navadvépa, where the waves of the great Ganges playfully splash against the golden shores decorated with golden stairs.

     mahanty - great; anantäni - limitless; gåhäni - houses; yatra - where; sphuranti - are
manifested; haimäni - golden; manoharäëi - charming; praty-älayam - in each home; yam - which; çrayate - rests; sadä - always; çréù - the goddess of fortune.
 

      I meditate on Çré Navadvépa, where there numberless beautiful golden palaces, all the eternal homes of the goddess of fortune.

vidyä-dayä-kñanti-makhaiù samastaiù
     ñaòbhir guëair yatra janaù prapannaù
saàstüyamänä åñi-deva-siddhais
     taà çré-navadvépam ahaà smarämi

     vidyä - knowledge; dayä - compassion; kñanti - tolerance; makhaiù - sacrifice; samastaiù - with al; ñaòbhiù - six; guëaiù - virtues; yatra - where; janaù - people; prapannaù - endowed; saàstüyamänä - glorified; åñi-deva-siddhaiù - by the åñis, devas, and siddhas.
 

      I meditate on Çré Navadvépa, where the people are glorified by the great sages. demigods, and Siddhas, and are filled with knowledge, mercy, tolerance, the results of all Vedic yajïas, and the six great opulences.

     yasya - of which; antare - in the middle; miçra-purandarasya - of Purandara Miçra; svänanda-gamyaika-padam - blissful place; niväsaù - abode; çré-gaura-janmädika-lélayäòhyaù - enriched with pastimes from the the birth of Lord Caitanya.
 

      I meditate on Çré Navadvépa, within which is the blissful home of Purandara Miçra, opulent with Lord Gaura's pastimes from His birth.

nimajjayaty ujjvala-bhäva-sindhau

     gauraù - Lord Gauräìga; yatra - where; bhraman - wandering; hariù - Lord Hari; sva-bhaktaiù - with His devotees; saìkértana-prema-bhareëa - with the great love of saìkértana; sarvam - everything; nimajjayaty - immerses; ujjvala-bhäva-sindhau - in the ocean of splendid ecstatic love.
 

      I meditate on Çré Navadvépa, where golden Lord Hari, by wandering everywhere and chanting the Holy Name with great love in the company of His devotees, plunged everyone into the brilliant ocean of ecstatic love of God.

     May he who with a joyful heart reads these eight verses opulent with meditation on Çré Navadvépa attain rare love for Çrémän Çacénandana's lotus feet.
